WHAT’S IN A NAME?

BIRCH COURT

“A pioneer species that plants itself in complex terrain, puts down deep roots, and creates the conditions for lasting impact.”

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I —
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
ROBERT FROST

Birch Court

Birch Court is the street where our founder grew up in Oakland, California, a quiet cul-de-sac lined with birch trees, and the place where the idea of building something meaningful first took root.

“A pioneer species that plants itself in complex terrain, puts down deep roots, and creates the conditions for lasting impact.”

The name carries a deeper resonance. The birch tree is among the first to take hold in new ground, a pioneer species whose roots stabilise and support entire ecosystems. Its wood is equally enduring, valued for its strength and versatility in objects built to last. And Court reflects not only where we began, but where we practice, grounding the name in both origin and profession.

That is the kind of practice we set out to build: one that takes root where the work is most needed, and stays long enough to see it through.

Built for Complexity

Founded on the conviction that rigorous legal practice and purposeful impact reinforce each other. Based in Singapore for over fifteen years, with a founder who has lived and worked across Asia-Pacific, the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Oceania.

Matt Kasdin

Matt began his career at Latham & Watkins across the firm’s New York, London, and Moscow offices, advising on over US$30 billion in project finance, cross-border M&A, and capital markets transactions for premier investment banking and private equity clients. He then served as Head of Legal & Policy at the United Nations Global Compact, where he shaped governance frameworks for the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.

He later joined a Singapore-based, NASDAQ-listed company where he built the ESG programme from the ground up, achieving Singapore’s number-one sustainability ranking and a Corporate Knights Global Top 25 position, and led the company through a high-profile reputational crisis involving human rights allegations covered by The New York Times.

He has held judicial clerkships at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the High Court of Zimbabwe, was a Fulbright Scholar working on legal reform projects in Bulgaria, and earlier wrote on human rights and environmental issues from Costa Rica.
